What is FIRST Robotics?
"To transform our culture by creating a world where science and technology are celebrated and where young people dream of becoming science and technology heroes."
Dean Kamen, Founder
FIRST is a non-profit organization that runs off of volunteers. FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) strives to motivate young students to discover how interesting and rewarding science and technology is. The goal is for students to learn about science and technology, as well as to develop important leadership and self-confidence skills. It sponsors the Junior FIRST LEGO League, for ages 6-9, all the way to the FIRST Robotics Competition, which is for high school students.
The FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) is an international varsity sport of the mind designed to help high-school-aged young people discover how interesting and rewarding the life of engineers and researchers can be. The FIRST Robotics Competition challenges teams of young people and their mentors to solve a common problem in a six-week timeframe using a common set of rules. Teams build robots from the parts and enter them in competitions designed by Dean Kamen, Dr. Woodie Flowers, and a committee of engineers and other professionals. FIRST redefines winning for these students because they are rewarded for excellence in design, demonstrated team spirit, gracious professionalism and maturity, and the ability to overcome obstacles. Scoring the most points is a secondary goal. Winning means building partnerships that last.

The Microsoft Seattle Regional, held at the Key Arena in Seattle, is now over! This regional was also the last regional for our seniors, and the picture above features all of the leaving seniors of the team. All of the seniors gave a speech at the team dinner and told us of their future goals.
Thanks to everyone who came to the regionals and supported our team! We hope you enjoyed it and we hope that you will come again next year!
At this regional, we did not make the top 8 seeded teams, but we were picked by an alliance and made it to the quarter finals, where we disappointingly lost 2-1 in best of three matches. To see more detail about our matches, go here.
Our team, however, received the first award since 2006! We were awarded the Delphi "Driving Tomorrow's Technology" Award.
The Delphi "Driving Tomorrow's Technology" Award celebrates an elegant and advantageous machine feature. This award recognizes any aspect of engineering elegance including, but not limited to: design, wiring methods, material selection, programming techniques, and unique machine attributes. The criteria for this award are based on the team's ability to concisely verbally describe, as well as demonstrate, this chosen machine feature. Our geneva drive was noticed and recognized for this award.
Even though the regionals are over, we will continue to meet off-season and accomplish many tasks, such as building prototypes and recruiting new members. Tomorrow we will attend the club fair at the 8th grade open house of CV to encourage incoming freshman to join our team.
